Art on the beach
an international art event in responsed to Tsunami,
organized by Ministry of Culture, 24 September 2005,
Patong Beach, Phuket

|
|
In December 2004 a tsunami hit
the fishing villages and tourism areas in
the south of Thailand. Thousands of sex
workers were effected. Art was often
the only way available for people to
express their experiences, hopes and
fears.
Empower Foundation was given
emergency support by American Jewish
World Services and Australian sex worker
groups SWOP and Scarlet Alliance in
order to provide services and advocacy
to those effected by the tsunami.
|
In September 2005 the Office of the Contemporary Art and Culture & the Thai Ministry of Culture
supported Empower Foundation to join in the International "Art on the Beach" Event commemorating
the tsunami.
For this event Empower bought two groups of people who had been severely effected by the
tsunami and also ignored during the recovery.
Youth from the fishing village of Baan Nam Khem joined with sex workers from urban Patong Beach
to explore how lives would be rebuilt hope recovered.
The final art installation focused on the need to plan for survival in order to conquer fear and
enjoy life.
